Women Make Art

The Project Gallery, BVM, Fermoy, Co.Cork. 2024 -2026

Following on from Women in Art, Women Make Art shifts focus from representation to production. The project investigates what happens when six women artists are given sustained access to an unloved, disused warehouse space : a site typically overlooked within the urban fabric.

Vacant buildings are a common feature of towns and cities. This project asks what might occur if such spaces were reactivated ,not for commercial development, but for the cultural and social enrichment of the surrounding community. What forms of dialogue, visibility, and collective energy become possible?

Each artist occupies the space for a three-month period. There is no prescribed theme, no imposed outcome, and no predetermined “ask.” This absence of constraint is central to the project’s ethos. Women artists are frequently accustomed to working within institutional, financial, and spatial margins; Women Make Art seeks to remove some of those margins by offering time, autonomy, and scale.

By reclaiming a neglected environment as a site of making, encounter, and experimentation, the project proposes an alternative model of cultural production; one rooted in trust, presence, and the transformative potential of women-led creative practice.
